Divorce & Transition

Divorce

Divorce, or dissolution of marriage, is the legal process for ending a marriage and resolving key issues such as property, finances, and parenting arrangements when children are involved.

As a no fault state, Colorado only requires the court to find that the marriage is irretrievably broken, and many families now look for approaches that support each person’s well being and the long term health of family relationships.

Transition in Divorce

The idea of divorce as a transition comes from areas such as grief, family systems, and counseling, which show that divorce is not only a legal event but an ongoing psychological and relational restructuring of people's lives and family relationships.

Transition looks different for each person and can appear at different times, with different intensity, and at different stages of the divorce process. People do not instantly “become divorced” when papers are signed; they gradually move into new patterns and meanings over time.

Mediation and Transition

We pay close attention to how this transition affects both spouses and their family in every session. People going through divorce are often overwhelmed - by the sheer amount of information, the decisions to make, and the emotions underneath it all.

Divorce doesn't happen the moment papers are signed. It is a transition - one that reshapes daily life as each person gradually finds new patterns, new footing, and new meaning overtime.

That's the lens we bring to each mediation. We meet each person as a whole individual, taking the time to understand what they need, what matters to them, and the outcome they're truly hoping for - as we help them shape agreements that reflect those needs while still fitting within the judicial guidelines they must follow.

Choice Mediation Colorado

In Colorado, mediation is encouraged and often required before a contested divorce or parenting case goes to trial.
